Symbols of Emancipation

Only about a quarter of the 360 synagogues that were built in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia in the 19th century still stand. This 104-page catalogue for the exhibition of the same name provides a historical introduction to the architecture of these sites, from the Neo-Classical and Empire, to the historicist styles of the latter half of the 19th century through to the Art Nouveau and modern period in the early 20th century. The catalogue also contains brief historical profiles on 60 of the most important synagogues built between 1825 and 1912 with more than 360 black & white and full-colour photographs of synagogues from various periods and reproductions of historical plans that help to place these buildings in the broader context of synagogue architecture.
