BETH OLAM The Jewish Cemeteries in South Bohemia

What memory do the symbols and texts preserved on the tombstones of Jewish cemeteries carry? Can the information that they pass on to the next generation be compared with the testimony of other sources depicting traces of the life of Jewish communities in southern Bohemia? Over the course of the 20th century, many of these monuments succumbed to targeted devastation and indifferent neglect. Nevertheless, nearly ten thousand Jewish tombstones dating from the 16th to the 20th century can be found in the South Bohemian region. The aim of this photo-rich publication is to present the South Bohemian Jewish cemeteries on the basis of several years of documentation of the current state and long-term archival research of 43 sites in the historically defined territory of the Prácheň and Bechyně regions, which are now administratively part of the South Bohemian Region. In addition to summarizing the various aspects of the establishment and operation of these sites or summarizing the epigraphic practices of inscriptions and the symbolism and iconographic decoration of Jewish tombstones, the book also captures a great deal of local specificity. For each of the sites examined, the authors have gathered, among other things, information on the origins of the local Jewish settlement and the cemetery itself, an overview of the oldest surviving tombstones, and an attempt to microhistory the more prominent Jewish families by comparing written and material sources. The overall picture is also complemented by selective editions of Hebrew texts on tombstones supplemented by their Czech translations. The book was published by the Czech-Budejovice branch of the National Heritage Institute as part of the representative Monumenta series, and its comprehensiveness and depth of coverage make it a challenge to be followed in other regions of the Czech Republic.
