Built by Angels

A Czech translation by Pavla Niklová of US writer and illustrator Mark Podwal’s book Built by Angels. In lyrical prose, this book tells the story of the Altneuschul, or the Old-New Synagogue, which is the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe. Throughout the years, this synagogue has endured plagues, wars, pogroms, floods and fires, as well as a late 19th-century project that led to the destruction of most of Prague's Jewish Town. As legend tells it, the Old-New Synagogue was built by angels. In the preface, the world-famous Jewish writer, thinker and Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel has the following to say: “Dr. Podwal’s skills as storyteller and artist make this book particularly endearing for children, and it would be only natural to further bring this story to life for Czech children by publishing it in their own language. Against all odds, the Prague synagogue and its tight-knit community have withstood the ravages of time, persecution, and war – and this book would be instrumental in keeping the memory of its tale of perseverance alive for generations of Czechs to come.”
