- LANGUAGE VERSIONS: CZE, ENG
- EXHIBITION CURATORS: Arno Pařík, Jewish Museum in Prague
- FIRST SHOWN: 2011
This exhibition charts in more detail than ever before a group of lesser-known synagogues in Bohemia and Moravia, which uniquely reflect the history and culture of the traditional Jewish communities in this region. Synagogues were the main and usually the only centre of religious, social and educational life for these communities. These old monuments, few of which have been preserved, are also valuable examples of local building traditions and form an integral part of the Czech Republic’s architectural heritage. This exhibition features the oldest synagogues of greatest historical and artistic value from the 17th and 18th centuries, which provide unique evidence of the history and culture of Jewish communities in the pre-Emancipation period and are interesting examples of the influence of local artistic styles, builders and craftsmen on their formation and decoration.
