Circumcision chair
A chair used in the synagogue during the circumcision of a newly born boy. It is usually in the form of a double chair, with one place for the godfather who holds the child in his lap and another, symbolically, for the prophet Elijah. It can also take a simple form, with another, richly decorated, chair, set aside for Elijah. The circumcision chair is usually made of wood with intricate carving, polychrome and, sometimes, upholstery.
