Shabbat lamp (Ger. Judenstern)
A lamp that is lit before the beginning of the Shabbat, used as a substitute for the Shabbat candelabrum*. Its shape is derived from that of Medieval lighting fixtures. An illuminating star with six or eight oil burners is attached to the lower part of the lamp; the tips of these burners contain wicks and hanging drip channels for the oil, which flows into a dish under the star. The height at which the lamp hangs can be altered by an adjustable mechanism. Shabbat lamps are cast from brass or bronze and their usual height, without the suspension rod, ranges between 30 and 60 centimetres.
