Burial garment (Heb. takhrikhim)
Dressing the dead in a special burial garment is part of the ritual cleansing carried out by the burial society (Aram. Hevrah Kadisha). It usually takes the form of a simple white shroud (the dead person’s kittel may be used for this purpose). However, there are also numerous special outfits, different for men and women, which are made of white cotton linen. These outfits were formally based on a traditional local garment and put together in accordance with the statutes of the particular burial society.
