Cup of Elijah
A wine cup set aside for the prophet Elijah during the Passover Seder meal. Expectation of his arrival symbolizes the hope for salvation with the arrival of the Messiah. Apart from general rules, neither the shape nor the material are precisely prescribed, but it is usually made of silver, less frequently of glass. Its purpose can be determined from the usual identificatory inscription and, for metal cups, also from the inserted double bottom which enables the use of a smaller amount of wine. The symbolic cup of Elijah has also been used in the course of the circumcision.
