Charity box of the burial society
A money-box used for collecting donations for the activities of the burial society, either in its office or during the burial ceremony when it was carried by the treasurer in the burial procession. Most frequently, it is a cylindrical or prismatic shape with one or two handles and a removable, lockable lid in which there is a slot for coins. Inscriptions provide information about the donors or the box’s function, place of use and date of manufacture; these are key to determining the owners of charity boxes, as other boxes of the same shape could be used for various purposes. Charity boxes are usually made of silver, less frequently of silver-plated copper or copper alloy. They range from between 15 to 20 centimetres in height.
