Wedding contract (Heb. ketubah)
A contract signed by witnesses and presented to the bride during or after the wedding ceremony. The basic Aramaic formula of the contract states the names of the married couple, the date and place of the wedding, the obligations of the husband to his wife and the amount the wife shall receive in the event of divorce or the husband’s death. The contract serves to protect the rights of the wife. It is written in Aramaic with Hebrew letters, in the earlier period usually on parchment. Unlike in other areas (e.g., Italy and Iran) extant ketubot from Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia are not illuminated or otherwise decorated.
