Synagogue scrolls
Made and written in the same way as the Torah scroll*, synagogue scrolls contain biblical texts which are read as part of the synagogue liturgy. Scrolls containing sections from the Prophets (Haftarot) or the Song of Songs (Heb. Shir ha-shirim), Book of Ruth, Lamentations (Eycha) or Ecclesiastes (Kohelet) have been preserved only rarely. The scroll of Esther* appears the most frequently. Scrolls are read in the synagogue on special occasions, such as Pesah, Shavuot, Tisha be-Av, Sukkot and Purim. Five scrolls (Heb. Hamesh Megilot) may also appear together in the form of a book volume.
